There was some kind of sick twistedness about the fact that Kassandra and Valentine had gone straight from threatening each other to having lunch together, and the fact that they were both alright with it. Of course neither of them noticed this fact really- they didn’t care. It wasn’t as if the same thing- or something like it- had happened last month. It was never exactly the same, but insults of some degree were almost always thrown.
Kazz had gone home still angry at him, but woke up almost not caring anymore. She waited at the offices all morning but knew that they would be meeting for lunch instead. She dressed just the same as she had the day before- crisp and plain business attire with her usual heels. Her chauffeur came around and took her to the restaurant at eleven thirty.
Arriving early was a good habit to have. It also let her survey the area- watch the people and what they were doing. She was just… curious, like that. With the all too innocent folder with the photos and information on the boy in it, she took her seat. The wait staff had grown accustomed to her and no longer bothered to offer her a seat outside. She hated being out there when there were seats that would work perfectly well inside.
But today’s affairs were more private, so she very deliberately asked for a table away from others. She waited without a drink and without ordering- that would come later. Kazz would wait for him. It was usually the same thing though, not that she really cared.
And so she turned on her tablet and read as she waited.
It was something she'd read before, but enjoyed nonetheless. Perhaps it was ironic that she was reading something by an author who was long dead and so far out of her time that if the two attempted to speak face-to-face that any attempt at conversation would fall flat. The tragedy of Macbeth was hardly a tragedy at all, in her mind's eye.
The only tragedy was that he'd been foolish enough to be caught in his pride on his bid for power. Good King Macbeth had his entire future laid out for him by the three witches. He'd had every warning, yet he was still blinded by what was to happen. He'd built his rule on his actions and what he did to get there, yet he could not maintain his position. It was a tragedy, in that regard, not the death and sacrifice along the way.
There would always be casualties in a war.

"Hello!"
It was with a much cheerier tone that he greeted her with today, and as he took his jacket off, flamboyantly threw it to the back of the chair opposite her and grinned at her before sitting down, it became strangely obvious that this was the side of Valentine she was stuck with today. Was it a bad thing? Not really, because it made him seem a lot less sinister and unsettling, but at the same time, it was probably unnerving for the mere fact that he could slip into a more deadly mode at any time - like a flick of a switch.
Either that or he was taking the date thing far too seriously.
"What is it you're reading?" He asked, tilting his head as he sat down, before practically jumping and jauntily gesturing with his right hand. "Wait! No! Don't tell me! Macbeth, William Shakespeare. Why am I not surprised? I mean, it's one of my favourites by him, though I'm more of a gothic literature man myself. Well... you could probably guess that too, right?"
He leaned in, resting his right elbow on the table and his chin on a strangely positioned hand. He was dressed almost identically to how he had been yesterday - black shirt, black tie, black jacket, and he was similarly pale as ever, the dark purple under his eyes still vividly obvious.

Kazz just stared at him for a moment as he sat down.
The turned off her tablet and set it down on the table in front of her as he cheerily greeted her.
Damn, it was too bloody early for this.
“Good morning.” She said with a somewhat haughty tone. Kassandra hadn’t slept well. For someone who didn’t necessarily need sleep, one would think that she wouldn’t be so unhappy without it, but nonetheless, it’s one of the things her human side won out on. She liked her sleep and last night she hadn’t gotten much of it.
Kazz raised an eyebrow out of amusement and raised the tablet again to show him he was right.
“Correct, Valentine. And I’m not surprised, no. Macbeth is one of the better things your lot managed to spew out. He is a bit of a fool though- much too prideful to rule. It’s why he failed, really. Now- Lady Macbeth. I think she would have had it in her to take his place. She certainly had the gall.” She said in amusement and handed him the menu.
The folder was tucked underneath it, and she gave him a slight nod to point it out.
“How was the rest of you night?” She asked him idly, continuing without hesitation. She relaxed back into her chair. It was lunchtime, but the restaurant was still fairly quiet on that saturday morning. It would be unlikely that they would be overheard, but she had to exercise caution in this town.
Things were changing- even she could tell.
And she didn’t like it.

2My lot? What're you referring to this time - humanity or romantic artistic sorts such as myself and William Shakespeare? And- you know Macbeth is based off a true story, right? Only Shakespeare did take some- artistic liberties,"
Lips curling into a smile, he listened to her talk about Macbeth, and found himself smirking slightly, face full of strange expression and intrigue by all this. "So- you see yourself as Lady Macbeth then? The one with all the power and potential? You think you could do it better than that fool with real emotions and some kind of guilt? Who am I in this story? And who's the boy? And how's it all changing now?"
He stopped and considered his questions himself, oddly impressed with his speed. And by speed, that meant he was talking- thinking- moving- rather quickly, and he seemed a bit incapable of calming down the left hand he was shaking to try and diffuse some energy.
"And my night? Well it was average, I suppose. I drank a bit, wrote a bit, wandered round town. The usual I'd suppose. You?"

Kassandra let out a genuine laugh- not a hint of malice behind it at his question.
“Humanity, of course. Well… some of your literature is actually tasteful, but I must say your technology is by far your best creation yet.” She raised her glass of water slightly to him and took a sip before continuing. “I know Macbeth is based off of history. It makes it all the more... interesting. The witches are quite the artistic liberty, aren’t they?” She shook her head, almost about to make a comment about the witches being added through such liberties, a sharp jab on her tongue about magic not being real on her tongue.
But she’d been proved wrong a few years ago.
She kept silent about the unspoken fact.
“I didn’t say that… but I suppose you could say I did. The thing about guilt is that it holds people back. Preys on them at their weakest moments. It’s a form of attachment- weakness if you will. I won’t call myself guiltless, but I am nonetheless aware of the fact that it can be the downfall of people in positions such as mine. I know I could do better from that fact alone.”
And it was something she truly believed to be true. She had calculated, perfectly, the possibilities of things going wrong if she played the game correctly. And they were very slim.
Kazz smiled slightly- but this time, there was a hint of cruelty. “I think we pick our own roles through our actions, do we not? Who do you want to be? The simple murderers sent after Banquo and his son Fleance? But… I can see it. Galileo is Fleance. An elusive nuisance.”
The answered his questions at her own pace, actually thinking quite carefully. She supposed that Valentine was actually Lennox, but would never speak such things. After all, Lennox had thought highly of Macbeth, only to be proved wrong later when he saw the tyrants ways.
She shrugged. “Worked into the night once you left. I went home just short of midnight. But I think you’d understand that considering the circumstances I’ve been quite… restless.”

"Do I need to go in to order my coffee for myself or will a worker come out in a bit?" He asked, grinning quite widely at her. His cheeriness could be considered some kind of annoyance, sure, but it made a welcoming change to the tension from the previous night. Still, he hoped it was keeping her on edge- he liked doing that- enjoyed playing with suspense and tension. His dark eyes were still glistening with a mischievous, almost joyful sort of fidget in his movement.
After a while, he began to tap on the table with his left hand, drumming each finger on the table separately to form some kind of rhythm, a heavy pulsating beat or something. It was clear, however, that he didn't seem to want to talk about business.
"Fleance? God, you do know your stuff, don't you? I always assumed if I had children they'd always have Shakespearian names- sadly, never found the right time- or person. Now tell me, are you much of a reader?"

At the very mention of a waiter, Kazz raised her hand slightly to grab the attention of anyone who may be working. A young man caught her eye and rushed over quickly, notepad in hand. He must’ve been new, for in his haste he practically ran into another table. But without stopping, he came to them.
“Coffee for the both of us, please.” She said shortly with a curt nod. “We’ll call you back over when we’re ready to order something else.” The last thing she would want was to be disturbed.
His chipper personality was honestly quite unnerving- part of her almost wished that it was the night before when they were yelling at one another. Not that she usually preferred it- but it was honestly something that she was more used to. She could often keep her cool in tense situations, but last night he had managed to push her buttons. Kassandra folded and smoothed out the napkin on her lap a few times, something that may have been considered a nervous fidget, though it was unclear if it was.
Her eyes flickered down to his hands and then focused on his fingers, tapping out the beat. Her gaze lingered there for a moment, but she said nothing of his actions. For all she knew, he could be doing it to annoy her. Kassandra didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of letting him know he was agitating her.
It was after a moment of silence and staring that she finally spoke. A scoff preceded her words and cocked her head slightly.
“Of course I do. I mean… well anyway. All you have to do is read the bloody play to know something like that. It’s a stated name not some metaphorical nonsense.”
The waiter returned with two coffees and offered them both creamer and sugar- the usual. But as always she refused. Kazz often preferred the taste of pure and strong coffee if she had it.
“Shakespearean names? Seems to be a bit of a curse, doesn’t it? Hamlet? No, you don’t want that. Ophelia? Definitely not. Desdemona? Less than desirable.” But there was some type of hesitation behind because- well, no- Valentine could not be flirting with her. But it seemed to her she was in a way, but she brushed it off. Flirting was a usual thing for her. It was in her nature and part of her charm.
But it didn’t make this any less odd for her.
“I would say it depends. If it doesn’t catch my interest, I really couldn’t care less about it. But if it does, sure. Has to be a good plot. None of that stupid pure romance and whatnot. None of those teenage angst novels. I can’t see why they’re so popular, they’re all the same.” Kazz took a sip of her coffee, resting both hands on either side of the mug.
“And yourself?”
